Granite State Ringers to perform holiday concert

The Granite State Ringers, New Hampshire’s only community handbell choir, will perform in a holiday concert at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 7:30 p.m. The concert is open to the public and admission is free.

The group, led by director Joan Fossum, will perform a variety of holiday music, including arrangements of Angels We Have Heard on High, Aria, First Noel, Still Still Still, Troika and Welsh Carol. In addition to the Saturday night concert, the group also will perform during the 10:30 a.m. worship service at Our Saviour’s on Sunday, Nov. 29.

Founded in 2007 by Fossum and Mary Divers, the non-profit Granite State Ringers promotes the art of English handbell ringing in New Hampshire and beyond. “Handbells were invented in eighteenth-century England as a way for tower bell ringers to practice their ‘changes,’ or ringing patterns, without disturbing entire neighborhoods,” said Our Saviour’s Music Director Dr. Alice Caldwell, who will accompany the handbell choir on pipe organ. “In the present day, handbell ensembles have been developed mostly for church music programs as an enrichment to the traditional church choir program. Handbell ensembles can play repertoire on their own, or in concert with the organ, choir, or other instruments.”

Fossum is married to organ builder Jeremy Cooper, a member of the Granite State Ringers who restored the 19th-century Hutchings-Plaisted-Cooper organ that was installed last year at Our Saviour’s. Additional information about the Granite State Ringers and its upcoming performances can be found at Our Saviour’s is located at 160 Hill Farm Road in Fairfield.
