Fairfield County Heart Walk & 5K Run attracts more than 600

More than 600 Fairfield County residents walked and ran for their hearts, and to help raise awareness and funds for the number one killer — heart disease — at the Fairfield County Heart Walk & 5K Run event, Sunday, Oct. 25 at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport. Individuals, company teams and families, and even dogs, participated to support the mission of the American Heart Association.

The Heart Walk is the American Heart Association’s biggest regional event. A 5K run was added this year, sanctioned by USA Track and Field (USATF) with nearly 100 runners. Hands-Only CPR training was offered, sponsored by Westchester Medical Center, as well as kids’ activities and entertainment.

The American Heart Association recognized two individuals who have made significant lifestyle changes to improve their cardiovascular health. Their Lifestyle Change Awards were presented to Richard Bonacum and Michael Bien for making healthy changes, like losing weight and eating healthier, to prevent heart disease. The AHA states that more than 80% of heart disease is preventable by simple lifestyle changes like exercising 30 minutes most days of the week, quitting smoking and eating healthier.
