New signage unveiled at Donnelly Walkway

On Monday, Oct. 5, Fischel Properties of Fairfield held a ribbon cutting ceremony at 63 Unquowa Road to unveil a new sign at the entryway to Donnelly Walk. Among those who attended were the Donnelly’s children, Eric and Tara, and several of their relatives as seen in the photo above.

Fischel Properties had collaborated with the Town of Fairfield to design and install a beautiful new steel archway that says Donnelly Walk across the top. This signage will help better identify the passageway between Unquowa Road and Sanford Street and better memorialize the late Kim and Tim Donnelly who were well respected community members and downtown business owners who lost their lives in a tragic event 10 years ago.

Hal Fischel, CEO of Fischel Properties said, “As owner of this property, I felt the small plaque at the site did not adequately provide a proper dedication to the Donnellys whom the passageway was named for. Erecting this decorative archway will not only make this area more attractive, but it will now give the Donnellys a more visible memorial.”

In 2005, the Town worked with Fischel Properties to establish a pedestrian walkway between Sanford Street and Unquowa Road which was later renamed in memory of the Donnellys. After relocating dumpsters and trash receptacles that once adorned the alleyway to a shared compactor unit on Sanford Street, the Town installed a concrete walkway with inlaid brick pavers, as well as benches and ornamental trees to make the area more inviting and pedestrian-friendly. A “buy-a brick” campaign helped defray expenses related to the walkway. Fischel Properties installed new lighting as well as replaced a dilapidated fence that bordered the walkway.
