Cadaver dogs search Easton woods for evidence of missing Navin couple

Cadaver dogs were in Easton Wednesday, searching for evidence recovery to help State Police learn the whereabouts of missing couple Jeffrey and Jeanette Navin.

“Yes the dogs were out yesterday, unsure of the exact address, no new updates from Major Crime,” Trooper Tyler Weerden said. “I do know the dogs were in Easton yesterday as part of the Navin case.”

Weeden said it was “also important to note that many of our dogs are cross-trained and can search for cadavers, evidence, etc.”

He was responding to a query about the dogs being in Easton to search the woods behind the house at 77 Staples Road where the couple lived before they mysteriously disappeared.

The Navins have been missing since Aug. 4.

Easton Police Chief Tim Shaw said he couldn’t comment about the cadaver dogs searching the woods in Easton.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the FBI Bridgeport Violent Crimes Task Force, Connecticut State Police Western District Major Crime Squad and the Easton Police Department, with the assistance of the State’s Attorney’s Office for the Fairfield Judicial District and the Westport, Weston and Bridgeport police departments.

Kyle Navin, 27, the couple’s son, has been in federal prison since his arrest on Sept. 8. He pleaded not guilty to a charge of possession of a firearm by someone who is an unlawful user of, or addicted to, any controlled substance. State Police executed a search warrant and found several guns as well as drugs at his Bridgeport home.

The firearms charge stems from the investigation into his missing parents.  No one has been charged in connection with the missing couple.

Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies on Aug. 7 began investigating the disappearance of Jeffrey Navin, 56, and Jeanette Navin, 55, of Easton.

They had moved to a rental house at 77 Staples Road in Easton after having lived in Weston for many years and raised their family there. The house was in Jeanette Navin’s name only, and she sold it for $900,000 shortly before the couple moved to Easton in June.

A blue 2003 Dodge Ram pickup truck belonging to the Navins was located by the State Police on Aug. 9 in the commuter lot in Westport, off Exit 42 of the Merritt Parkway. The passenger side window of the pickup truck reportedly had been broken out, and there were shards of glass on the ground.

Investigators conducted a court-authorized search of Kyle Navin’s Aldine Avenue residence in Bridgeport on Aug. 13 and seized two firearms and numerous rounds of ammunition from his bedroom, as alleged in the criminal complaint.

Law enforcement officers conducted a second search of Kyle Navin’s residence on Aug. 19 and located and seized items indicative of substance abuse, including numerous heroin brand-stamped glassine bags with heroin residue, hypodermic needles, empty prescription bottles for oxycodone and prescription bottles containing other controlled substances, the complaint alleges.

Investigators also recovered from Kyle Navin’s residence a receipt from a firearms shooting range that was issued on Aug. 5. The complaint further alleges that investigators conducted a court-authorized search of Navin’s cell phone and reviewed numerous text messages that discuss his use of heroin, oxycodone and Xanax.

The charge of possession of a firearm by an individual who is an unlawful user of and addicted to any controlled substance carries a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years.

State Police previously spent days searching a landfill in Putnam for any evidence of the missing couple. Searches have also been conducted at the couple’s last known residence in Easton and in the woods surrounding their former home in Weston. So far, the search has come up dry.
