Martha Eloise Spetka Pollak

Martha Eloise Spetka Pollak died peacefully at home in Wilton, Connecticut on Wednesday, June 20, 2012. She was 91.

While years ago dementia made daily life a challenge, she was ever the irreverent firecracker maintaining her humor, spunk, beauty and dignity to the end.

The child of Roy Russell Spetka and Margaret Jenny Ish Spetka, Mrs. Pollak and her four brothers grew up in Mansfield, Ohio. She graduated from The Ohio State University in 1942 and served in the US Coast Guard as an officer during World War II. She met her future husband, the late Capt. Charles N. Pollak, an officer in the Army Air Corps, in Washington, DC, at an Officers’ Club dance. They married in 1946 at the Riverside Church in New York City.

Unlike many women of her generation, Mrs. Pollak always worked. She was a teacher of physical education and health, newspaper publisher, fastidious homemaker, frustrated bookkeeper, meticulous paralegal and a volunteer with the PTA, Red Cross and other charities. She was very involved in the campaign to avert efforts to build a nuclear power plant on Cockenoe Island in Westport, CT. Over the years she lived in Maracaibo and Caracas, Venezuela; Whittier and Menlo Park, Calif.; Westport, Old Greenwich, Southport and Wilton, CT.; Nantucket, MA.; and White Sound, Abaco, Bahamas. An accomplished racing crew on Thistle class sailboats, she was an active member of Cedar Point Yacht Club and the Hopetown Sailing Club, which she and her husband endowed.

She is survived by three daughters, a son and their spouses: Pamela Pollak of Southport, CT.; Peggy Pollak and Linn Montgomery of Flagstaff, AZ.; Perrin Pollak Damon and Daniel G. Damon of Newberg, OR and her son, Christopher, and daughter-in-law Janice Pollak of Wilton, CT who provided her comfort, care, and support during recent years with the help of her devoted caregivers Milla and Nathalie. She is also survived by nine grandchildren whom she adored.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to United Way of Coastal Fairfield County, 75 Washington Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06604-3802. To send an online condolence, please visit
