Free book club for local writers

Writers and readers in the Fairfield County community are invited to a new Book Club for Writers at Westport Writers’ Workshop held Sept. 24, Oct. 15, Nov. 12 and Dec. 3, from 7-9 p.m., at 3 Sylvan Road South, 2nd floor, Westport. Refreshments served.

The book to be discussed at the first meeting Sept. 24 is A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson. Author and Books, Ink’s HamletHub editor Sally Allen will facilitate.

Westport Writers’ Workshop Director Valerie Ann Leff is looking forward to the launch. “I am so excited to have Sally Allen bringing her expertise and energy to this book club focused upon the tools that great writers use. Writers also must be great readers. This is one of the ways we are supporting our workshop participants and other local writers.”

Sally Allen indicates the purpose of the club. “This book club is for writers and readers interested in exploring how language and structure shape ideas. Each month, we will select a contemporary or classic book to discuss with an emphasis upon construction – diction, syntax, narrative arc, and character development — and the relationship between the writer’s craft and meaning. Read in this way, literary works become laboratories for experimentation and play.”

Sally Allen is the author of Unlocking Worlds: A Reading Companion for Book Lovers coming out in November, 2015. Allen knows that good books don’t just draw us in; they talk to us, shape us, and transport us to times, places, and minds different from our own. Celebrating books and those who read them, Allen shows how the solitary act of reading both shapes our individual lives and can become a powerful thread through which we create community and connection.

Sally earned a PhD from New York University in English Education, with an emphasis in writing and rhetoric, and a MA in English Language and Literature. She has taught writing and literature at New York University, Fairfield University, and Sacred Heart University, and she is currently an associate faculty member in Communications at Post University.
