LETTER: Supports Tetreau for First Selectman

FI-Letter-to-the-EditorTo the Editor:

First Selectman of Fairfield is not a “starter job.” Fairfield is a large, complicated town with more than 60,000 people that needs a mature, experienced and intelligent person to be its CEO (i.e. First Selectman).

Mike Tetreau is the most qualified and able First Selectman we have had over the 20 years I have lived here. We have among the largest number of children in public schools of any district in Connecticut, as well a large retirement age population, many living on fixed incomes. In terms of wealth, our population is quite heterogeneous — very wealthy, upper middle to lower middle class and working class. We also have people in need of assistance. As a result, Fairfielders agree on many priorities for our Town but disagree on just as many.

We have citizens who don’t think we need a Senior Center and others who think 70 students per elementary school classroom would be just fine. We have citizens focused on our marinas, our libraries, beaches, real estate, schools, senior citizen activities and services, sidewalks, roads, restaurants, local businesses, shopping, lakes, fishing and so many other things (not least of all taxes). Everyone is passionate; so how does a leader strike a balance that is in the short, medium and long term interests of Fairfield? Well, you start with intelligence, common sense and experience, and throw in a large dose of caring.

Mr. Tetreau is a graduate of Princeton University with a degree in engineering. I was told by a classmate of his at Fairfield High School that he was one of the smartest kids in the school but also one of the nicest. He wanted to give back to his home town so served on our RTM, Planning-and-Zoning Commission, Board of Finance, and now as First Selectman. Through years (and years) of public service to Fairfield he has been involved in the micro and macro aspects of running our Town. His public service has spanned good and tough times, including hurricanes and financial crises, as well the emotional devastation and loss from 9/11.

While other Connecticut towns have been shrinking in recent years, Fairfield has thrived. Fairfield’s bond rating was restored to AAA and our rates of tax increase have fallen each year Mr. Tetreau has been First Selectman. He has navigated Fairfield through some difficult times while managing to deliver the lowest tax increase for Fairfielders in the last 15 years.

In my opinion Mike Tetreau more than deserves another term as First Selectman.
