Fairfield resident appointed to Food Allergy Task Force

State Reps. Brenda Kupchick (R-132) and Cristin McCarthy Vahey (D-133) have announced that Fairfield resident and parent Jessica Curran has been appointed to the Task Force to Study Life-Threatening Food Allergies in Schools by State House Republican Leader Themis Klarides, R-Derby.

Before the 2015 legislative session, Kupchick was contacted by parents with children with life threatening food allergies and partnered with Rep. Cristin McCarthy Vahey to introduce a bill to form this new task force with the mission of disseminating best practices for food allergies and improving food allergy policy for all school districts.

The Connecticut Department of Education currently has guidelines for local school districts in the development of district-wide management plans for students with life-threatening allergies and glycogen storage disease; however implementation of food allergy policy varies widely among school districts.

Both Jessica Curran and Fairfield resident Patricia Donovan gave compelling and personal testimony as it related to their children during the legislature’s Education committee public hearing on the issue of food allergy policies in schools.

“My hope is the experts in the field of life threatening food allergies, the Center of Disease Control, the departments of Health and Education and the medical community, will work to create a state-wide policy for school districts to follow that is based on science and not emotion. It is also important to have the voices of parents of children with life threatening food allergies at the  able, Jessica Curran will be a valuable member of the task force in helping establish state-wide school food allergy policies,” said Rep. Kupchick.

Rep. Cristin McCarthy Vahey said, “Working with Jessica, advocates and health care providers from around Connecticut, and national experts, we created a vehicle to improve policy and its implementation for students with life threatening food allergies. This task force will be an important voice in creating greater understanding and awareness for all of Connecticut’s school districts.”
