Shoplifter assaults Trumbull police officer; crashes into vehicle, garage in Fairfield

A Hartford woman was arrested for assaulting a police officer, reckless endangerment in the first degree, larceny in the fourth degree, possession of narcotics, interfering with a police officer, reckless operation, and operating a vehicle without a license after a high-speed chase that began at the Westfield-Trumbull Mall and ended in Fairfield around 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24.

Trumbull police said that Blessing Smith, 23, of Hartford was reported to be shoplifting from Children’s Place Store in the mall before fleeing from an officer on foot, assaulting the officer in the mall’s parking lot and driving away in her car.

According to a report, Smith exited the mall onto Madison Avenue at a high rate of speed and ignored several police cars that were in pursuit of her. Smith then turned onto Congress Street in Fairfield where she struck another vehicle and caused it to turn over.

Despite the accident, Smith continued driving and later crashed the car into the garage of a home located on Congress Street.

Police said that she then fled on foot but was taken into custody in the woods, a short distance from the home.

A report said that in Smith’s car was “a large quantity of suspected stolen merchandise from several different stores located in the mall,” estimated to be worth more than $1,000. There was also marijuana found in the car, police said, and a substance that’s suspected to be crack cocaine.

A Trumbull police officer sustained a hand injury from the assault at the mall and a Fairfield woman was treated for a head laceration from the car crash in Fairfield.

According to the report, Smith complained of back pain after being arrested.

Smith was belligerent and uncooperative when the first officer approached her at the mall, police said. She reached into her purse at one point before fleeing on foot, according to a report, and an attempt to use a taser on her was unsuccessful.

She exited the mall at the JC Penny’s parking lot and threw a shopping bag at the pursuing officer, police said.

The report added that there was a second, female suspect who was shoplifting from the store around the same time.

Fairfield police are investigating the car accident.
