Fairfield celebrates National Electric Drive Week

In celebration of National Electric Drive Week, Sept. 12-20, Fairfield is hosting its first Electric Vehicle Showcase on Saturday, Sept.12, from 11-2, in the Auxiliary Commuter Parking Lot at 140 Mill Plain Road across from Sportsplex @ Fairfield.

Get behind the wheel of the future of Automotive Technology. Seven local dealerships, including BMW of Bridgeport, Miller-Nissan and Porsche of Fairfield, Toyota of Westport, Curran and Prestige VW, Karl Chevrolet, will be demonstrating their electric options. Where else do you get to compare vehicles on the same lot? There will also be electric bikes (surely a holiday hotlist item…) courtesy of Zanes Cycles for you to test drive.

Fairfield First Selectman, Mike Tetreau, State Senator, Tony Hwang, and State Representatives Brenda Kupchick and Laura Devlin will be on hand to discuss the importance of alternative fuel and Electric Vehicles for CT’s transportation future. With CT ranking among the lowest in the American Lung Association’s State of the Air Report Card 2015, anything we can do to switch from fossil fuels would be a boon to the health of our citizens.

As for testimonials, enthusiastic members of the Westport Electric Car Club and local Fairfield-area owners will be there to show off their cars and talk about their EV experience, from the cost savings, to ease of charging, to road trips. Speaking of convenience, according to the Department of Energy, Connecticut has 185 public electric charging stations and 400 electric charging outlets. Fairfield has 10 public stations, with many more to come.

Members of Fairfield’s Clean Energy Task Force will also be there to explain the Connecticut Hydrogen and Electric Vehicle Purchase Rebate program, or CHEAPR, which provides rebates of up to $3,000 for the purchase of electric cars. In addition, there are federal tax credits of up to $7,500 available. See http://www.ct.gov/deep/cwp/view.asp?a=2684&q=561422&deepNav_GID=2183 for more information.

One of 170 events taking place in 165 cities throughout the U.S., Drive Electric Fairfield’s showcase stands out for the large number of cars that will be displayed. The event has been organized by Fairfield’s Clean Energy Task Force, The Fairfield Bike and Pedestrian Committee and The Fairfield Earth Day Committee. It is free and open to the public. So come on down!
