Massive fire in Bridgeport near Exit 25

Firefighters from around the area are helping at the scene of a major fire in the area of Railroad and Hancock avenues.

Doingitlocal.com reported that three buildings are involved.

Heavy smoke is visible between exits 26 and 25 on I-95 south, and ladder trucks are spraying water onto the blaze.

A cloud of smoke hangs like fog to the northeast of the fire, covering an area from the merge of routes 8 and 25 to Exit 3 off Route 25 South, Main Street and Washington Avenue in Bridgeport.

The mayor’s office is advising residents in that area to keep windows closed.

I-95 was mainly clear of traffic shortly after 10 p.m. Police have roads in the area blocked and are sitting on the shoulder near the scene in what appears to be an effort to deter sight-seers.

Train service was interrupted early in the evening. Around 10:15 p.m. Metro-North reported residual delays of up to 45 minutes between Southport and Bridgeport.

Stratford Health Director Andrea Boissevain tweeted that the Stratford-Trumbull-Monroe Medical Reserve Corps was summoned to the scene to help provide rehabilitation for firefighters battling the blaze on an oppressively hot night.

Fire crews from Stratford, Trumbull, Easton and Shelton are among those summoned to the scene to provide assistance.

More details will be posted as they become available.
