Art/Place gallery holds reception and artists’ talk

There will be a reception and artist talk at Art/Place Gallery for Variety Show, the artwork of three new members, Elaine Clayton, Art Gerstein, and Alice Katz on September 6, from 2 to 5 p.m. The artists will also talk about their work on September 17, from noon to 1 p.m. The show runs from August 27 to September 28. See or call 203-259-8026.

Each of these artists works in a different style, medium, size, and colors, and each has a series of work in the show expressing a different message. However, in addition to being artists, they are all also healers.

Elaine Clayton is a Westport resident, an artist, an illustrator, an author, a teacher, and a Reiki Master. She has a degree in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in NY and has taught art for many years. She is also the author and illustrator of children books and two books on the connection between art and the intuitive process. She teaches workshops for children and adults in museums, libraries and schools and wellness centers.

About her series in this show, Painting Midrash: Eve’s Dreams, she says, “I explore the contrast between the notion of Paradise and the human condition of struggle, disappointment, pain and suffering. …I imagine what it would have been like to be in Paradise, to come to know it as Eve did and then to have it alter and shift into a world that is no longer blissful, except in faint glimmers or short-lived moments. …I use color to express a feeling of dream states and intuitive knowing.”

Arthur Gerstein, Highest Aspirations

Arthur Gerstein, Highest Aspirations

Art Gerstein lives in Norwalk, is an artist and a Reiki healer. He was an assistant to a photo-journalist, a photographer for a special effects director, and then he learned digital imaging. His Metallica series in this show are digital images on metallic paper or canvas prepared with a gold luminous surface.

He has shown in several galleries in Florida, where he received the Florida West Arts New Direction Award for Artistic Achievement. His work is on the internet and has been shown locally at City Lights Gallery in Bridgeport and other area venues. Currently, it is at the Sheffield Island Light House and at St Philip Artists’ Guild in Norwalk.

Art says, “My work comes from a place within me that is spiritually connected and is influenced by how colors affect people. My goals include to provoke deep contemplation, relaxation/excitation and to bring healing with color and with Life Force Energy. My art is thematic, bringing to the surface the hidden universe I perceive, with depth and feeling that make many viewers want to reach out and feel the surface of the art pieces themselves.”

Alice Katz is a resident of Fairfield, is an artist, author, teacher, and psychotherapist. She has a degree in Art Education and taught art for many years in public schools. She then became a psychotherapist in private practice and author of self-help books on Anger Management and Emotional Eating.

Alice has been making art her whole life, having come from a family with many artists. Her artwork has been in many area museums and galleries and is in private collections. Besides being an Art/Place member, she is Program Chair of Fairfield County Arts Association and is on the Curatorial Committee for the Kershner Gallery in the Fairfield Library.

Her Food, Eating, and Indulgence series in this show includes works in all of the different materials she uses. She says, “These works are all based on one of my specialties as a therapist and author, that of eating issues. My sculptures, paintings, collages, and photomontages include recycled materials. They are all about patterns, shapes, colors, composition, and showing the viewer a new way to see the world.”
