Sail Park City Regatta to benefit St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound

The 2015 Sail Park City Regatta™ will take place on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at the Fayerweather Yacht Club (FYC) in Bridgeport. Now in its 14th year, the Regatta will be presented by FYC, Black Rock Yacht Club in Bridgeport and Housatonic Boat Club in Stratford. Proceeds from the Regatta will benefit St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound, Connecticut’s premier cancer charity.

“We are pleased to announce the 14th running of The Sail Park City Regatta,” said Regatta Chair Rick Perret. “This exciting event raises money to support SWIM Across the Sound, an organization that provides assistance to cancer patients and their families right here in our community. Cancer is so prevalent in our society that everyone we know has been affected by it in one way or another. This Regatta provides a spirited and fun way for the community to come together for a compelling cause. Over a quarter of a million dollars has been raised since its inception.”

“The origins of the regatta started more than 14 years ago when a few members of Fayerweather Yacht Club were observing the SWIM Across the Sound Marathon,” added Mr. Perret. “An idea clicked in their minds – ‘Why can’t we do a Regatta and raise money to help?’ That first Regatta saw seven boats at the starting line. Now we’ve grown to over 40 boats and we hope to have even more in 2015.

This year’s sponsors include Whole Foods Market Fairfield, Aquarion Water Company, Vineyard Vines, and SCA. There is still time for more 2015 sponsors and vendors to get on board.

The Regatta will consist of up to two races, depending on conditions. There will be Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker PHRF Classes, along with a new non-competitive “Navigator Fun Race.” One-design racers, junior sailors, and boats with all-women crews are encouraged to race. Entrants can qualify for 2015 ECSA Points. Trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third place finishers in each division, and all skippers and crew are urged to solicit donations for their boat. The three boats that raise the most funds will receive special awards. All donations to the Sail Park City Regatta™ are tax deductible.

The crew, either a sailboat or “virtual sailboat” that raises the most funds will be awarded the Jan Williams Memorial Trophy, honoring the SWIM Across the Sound co-chair and volunteer who was perhaps the charity’s staunchest supporter.

Free overnight dockage for boats sailing in the Sail Park City Regatta™ will be available on Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18 at Fayerweather Yacht Club and Captain’s Cove Seaport. Captain’s Cove monitors VHF channel 18 and their phone number is 203-335-1433. FYC monitors VHF channel 14 and their phone number is 203-576-6796. Skippers docking overnight at FYC should be prepared to raft up. Black Rock Yacht Club is offering free overnight moorings to participating boats.
