SCM insurance sponsors teen driver safety education course

Last year, more than 5,000 teenagers died in motor vehicle crashes. They were the leading killer of American youths aged 16 to 19. To alter this tragic outcome, Tire Rack Street Survival has developed a non-profit, national driver education program that teaches teen drivers the skills they need to stay alive.

SCM Insurance, a home and auto insurance provider based in Bridgeport, is once again sponsoring this important program for young drivers, in coordination with the Fairfield County Sports Car Club. Street Survival training school will be held at the Stratford Army Engine Plant in Stratford, on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., for licensed and permitted drivers ages 16 to 21 accompanied by a parent or guardian.

“Driving is one of the most dangerous things a person can do, but many people, especially teens, don’t realize that,” notes Keith Scala, owner and president of SCM Insurance. “The fact that so many of our young people are dying in car accidents is shocking, and something we must all work to change. As a home and auto insurance provider for many years, I’m dedicated to empowering young drivers and to partnering with this important program. It’s my way of giving back to the community and providing much needed skills to a new generation of young drivers.”

Street Survival is a hands-on course that incorporates real world driving situations and, in effect, gives young drivers years of experience in one day. It is not designed to replace the traditional Driver’s Ed program, but to go beyond the basic driving school curriculum and enhance young people’s ability to handle real road issues. Through the program, they will learn about skid control, accident avoidance, threshold braking, how their actions govern a car’s responses, and much more. As a result, they will become safer, more effective drivers.

The fee for the daylong program is $75, and lunch is provided. The event is limited to 40 participants, and all interested drivers are encouraged to register now.
