Town declares June Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

On Wednesday, June 3, The First Selectman of Fairfield, Mike Tetreau, declared the month of June Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month and issued a proclamation. The First Selectman made the proclamation at Fairfield Town Hall and was joined by Fairfield Ludlowe High School students, Ashlynn Finnegan and Evie Johnston as well as Selectman Kevin Kiley and Selectman Sheila Marmion. The proclamation was presented to Lexi Rodriguez, Special Events Director for the Alzheimer’s Association Connecticut Chapter.

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month — an opportunity to join the global conversation about the brain, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Everyone who has a brain is at risk to develop Alzheimer’s, a fatal disease that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed. During the month of June, the Alzheimer’s Association® asks people around the world to take the Purple Pledge and use their brains to fight Alzheimer’s disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association Connecticut Chapter estimates there are more than 73,000 people in Connecticut with Alzheimer’s disease and a growing population of early onset Alzheimer’s in the state. There are 177,000 caregivers who provide more than 200,000 hours of unpaid care each year to family, friends and colleagues.  Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death and the only one of the top ten that has no way to be slowed, stopped or prevented. There is no cure.  The Alzheimer Association provides care, support and services throughout the state for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
