Prep defeats Shelton in SCC baseball semifinal

Brett Stevenson went three-for-three and drove in three runs in leading No. 2 seed Fairfield Prep to a 6-3 Southern Connecticut Conference semifinal round baseball playoff win over No. 3 Shelton on Thursday afternoon at Whitey Puirek Field in West Haven.

The Jesuits will take on No. 5 Amity Regional of Woodbridge, who put together a 16-hit attack to down No. 1 Notre Dame of West Haven, 14-2, in the evening contest.

The two teams will meet at noon on Saturday at Puirek for the SCC championship.

Junior Grant Stone pitched six innings to get the win for the 19-3 Jesuits.

Stevenson drove in two runs with a triple to right center in the fifth inning, giving Prep a 6-2 lead.

Shelton, 16-6, got two runs in the top of the inning, closing Prep’s gap from 3-0 to 3-2.

Singles by Jordan Urbani and Jake Camp, his third hit of the game, put runners on first and second and consecutive base hits by lead-off hitter Chris Kanios and Mike Cowell drove in Urbani and Camp.

Prep scored a run in the first on Simon Whiteman’s sacrifice fly to right. Jim Colihan led off the game drawing a walk off

Shelton starting and losing pitcher Justin Lynch (6-3). He stole second and went to third on Gael catcher Mark Zoppi’s throwing error.

The Jesuits added two more runs in the third on two hits, one each by Whiteman and Stevenson and a walk.

Shelton scored its final run in the seventh. Consecutive singles by Urbani, Camp and Kanios loaded the bases before Cowell’s sac fly to center plated Urbani.

Stone scattered six hits while striking out three. He was also involved in two double-plays, the second of each ended the Gaels’ rally in the fifth.

“He’s not overpowering (Grant Stone), but he’s a smart pitcher,” said Prep coach Rudy Mauritz. “He’s usually able to keep the ball down and get outs.

“I thought we played a very sound, fundamental game today. We ran the bases exceptionally well.”
