Fairfield reps work to better Fairfield Metro Station service

State Representatives Laura Devlin (R-134), Brenda Kupchick (R-132) and Cristin McCarthy Vahey (D-133) are pleased to announce that Metro-North railroad will be increasing the number of train cars for the AM train #1433 (the 7:37 a.m. local from Fairfield Metro).

As part of the April 26 schedule change, Metro-North railroad reduced from the number of cars from 10 cars to 8 cars. The change was based upon the spring 2015 preliminary count on this train of 712 customers, or 85.8% customer loading factor on an 8 M8 train, which has a seating capacity of 840 seats.

The Fairfield legislative delegation received commuter complaints regarding the inability of passengers to find seats on the morning Metro-North train #1433 due to lack of capacity. The state legislators made an official inquiry to Metro-North.

In response, Metro-North completed a new up-to-date rider count for train #1433. The count of train #1433 showed a maximum of 834 riders being carried or about 120 more than our previous data showed.

As a result, Metro-North has instructed its transportation team to activate either 9 M8s (with 954 seats) or 8 older rail cars (with 920 seats) instead of the 8 M8 cars currently assigned, until we can put out a new equipment program.

“Our Fairfield commuters will be very happy to hear this news. I thank Metro-North for their quick action in addressing this matter. Our rail commuters deserve reliable, responsive and safe commuter trains and I will continue to fight for their commuter rights,” said Rep. Devlin, a member of the legislature’s Transportation committee.

Rep. Kupchick said, “Commuters deal with a lot of frustration so it’s encouraging when commuters, legislators and Metro North can work together for a positive outcome that relieves some of that frustration. I’m happy we could be helpful”.

Rep. McCarthy Vahey, also a member of the Transportation Committee said, “Our commuters deserve a seat on the train as they ride into New York and other destinations. We hope Metro North riders will continue to reach out to the state delegation and directly to Metro North so that we can continue to fight for the service they deserve.”

Metro-North has also said once the older rail cars are retired, the #1433 train will be assigned at least 9 M8 cars.
