Audubon hosts nature walk to celebrate National Trails Day

Families are invited to Connecticut Audubon Society’s Center at Fairfield, 2325 Burr Street on Saturday, June 6 for a one-hour nature walk to celebrate American Hiking Society’s 2015 National Trails Day® Weekend.

Register for one of three walks, starting at: 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. or 1 p.m.; free.

Take a leisurely, guided 1.5 mile journey through the Audubon Society’s Larsen Sanctuary to explore its temperate deciduous forest, garden marsh, meadow and swamp. Observe bird habitats and ecological points of interest, and discuss efforts to conserve, protect and enhance them. The varied terrain is of easy-to-moderate difficulty.

In addition to the walk, participants are invited to visit the Connecticut Audubon Society’s Nature Store to receive 20% off the price of field guides, walking sticks and more. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Advance registration is recommended. Call 203-259-6305, ext. 109 to reserve your spot in the walk of your choice. Walks will only be canceled in the event of heavy rain. Sturdy footwear is required for variable terrain.

Connecticut Audubon Society’s Trails Day event is part of the State of Connecticut’s Great Park Pursuit, a series of activities designed to introduce families to the outdoors, build the next generation of environmental stewards and showcase Connecticut’s State Parks and Forests this spring.

National Trails Day, is a nationwide hiking initiative established by the American Hiking Society to encourage the public and outdoor enthusiasts to seek out their favorite trails while participating in numerous events held in each state. Connecticut Trails Day is coordinated by the Connecticut Forest & Park Association.
