Fairfield Junior Women’s Club holds town-wide spelling bee

Each year, the Fairfield Junior Women’s Club organizes a town-wide Spelling Bee consisting of classroom winners from Fairfield’s 5th grades. This year the Spelling Bee will be held Monday, May 18, at 7 p.m., at Roger Ludlowe Middle School Auditorium.

The JWC is looking for photographers for the event.

This year’s judges include Anna Henry, past director, Connecticut Junior Women, Inc.; Mary Sorhus, head of Children’s Services, Fairfield Public Library; and John Kovach, editorial director, Hersam Acorn Newspapers.

Event sponsors are Bankwell, People’s United Bank, and Saugatuck Sweets.

Last year’s Spelling Bee included 40 students, and the Bee’s two remaining participants spelled through 18 rounds of words. The competition even included the Spelling Bee’s first ever tie for third place.

Open to women in Fairfield and nearby towns, the JWC is a non-profit service organization that gives members the chance to make new friends while giving back to the greater community through social and personal enrichment programs, fundraisers, and local events, such as Touch-a-Truck, A Visit to Santa’s House and the Town-wide Spelling Bee.
