Fairfield Teen Theatre sponsored by the Parks & Recreation Commission will hold an open call auditions for its Main Stage production of Legally Blonde the musical and registration for Magic Box production of Avenue Q School Edition on Monday, May 18 and Tuesday, May 19, from 3-6 p.m., at Fairfield Woods Middle School Auditorium, 1115 Fairfield Woods Road.

Actors will audition in order of arrival. The Main Stage and Magic Box programs will take place at Fairfield Woods Middle School. Participants must be residents of Fairfield and between the ages of 13-19. Teens should prepare a one minute song in the style of the show and only need to attend one of the audition dates, not both. Some that audition for the Main Stage show may be cast in our Magic Box program.

There are no registration fees for these programs however; there are mandatory fund raising requirements for Main Stage and Magic Box actors, crew and orchestra members. The fund raising requirement for Main Stage is $250 per participant. The fund raising requirement for the Magic Box program is $200 per participant.

The Main Stage program will rehearse Monday through Friday, from 6-10 p.m., beginning on Monday, June 22 (except July 4) and will end on Monday, Aug. 10, at Fairfield Woods Middle School. Performance dates for Main Stage are July 31, Aug. 1, 7, 8, at 8 p.m. and Aug. 2 and 9, at 2 p.m. Returning to the Main Stage production is Carole Jean Frawley as musical director/producer and Eli Newsom as director of both Main Stage and Magic Box again this summer.

This year’s Main Stage production, Legally Blonde the musical, book by Heather Hach, music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, is based on the novel by Amanda Brown and the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer motion picture. Harvard’s beloved blonde takes the stage by pink storm in this fun, upbeat story of self-discovery. Elle Woods appears to have it all. Her life is turned upside-down, however, when her boyfriend dumps her so he can start getting serious about his life and attend Harvard Law. Determined to get him back, Elle uses her charm to get into Harvard Law. At school, she struggles with peers, professors, and Warner Huntington. With the help of Paulette and Emmett, though, Elle quickly realizes her potential and sets out to prove herself to the world.

A fabulously fun international award-winning musical based on the adored movie, Legally Blonde the musical, follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery, and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. This action-packed musical explodes on the stage with memorable songs and dynamic dances. Equal parts a hilarious and heart-warming story, this musical is so much fun it should be illegal. Legally Blonde the musical will take audiences from the sorority house to the halls of justice with Broadway’s brightest heroine (and of course, her chihuahua, Bruiser). Based on the adored movie, Legally Blonde the musical stays true to form with a peppy score and playful book. This musical is enjoyable from start to finish.

Our Magic Box program provides a full musical theatre experience in a shorter mid-day rehearsal period. This group will rehearse Monday through Friday (except July 4) beginning June 22, from 10-1 and will present Avenue Q school edition also at Fairfield Woods Middle School on Friday, July 17, Saturday, July 18, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, July 19, at 2 p.m.

Filled with gut-busting humor and a delightfully catchy score, not to mention puppets, Avenue Q school edition is a truly unique show that has quickly become a favorite for audiences everywhere. Because the original Avenue Q has some content elements that have previously made it a difficult choice for some community productions, Music Theatre International worked with the Avenue Q authors to create an adaptation that maintains the dramatic (and comedic) intention and integrity of the piece, while editing it to make it more appropriate for high school audiences and performers. With music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, book by Jeff Whitty, AVENUE Q SCHOOL EDITION is a puppet-filled comedy that follows a group of 20-somethings seeking their purpose in big-city life. Winner of the TONY “Triple Crown” for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, Avenue Q school edition is part actors, part puppets, and packed with heart. The laugh-out-loud musical tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that although the residents seem nice, it’s clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood. Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.

Participants of Magic Box are not required to audition, but teens who would like to be considered for leading roles in Magic Box need to prepare a song one minute in length. Teens may register/audition on May 18 or 19 at Fairfield Woods Middle School Auditorium Lobby. Some that audition for the Main Stage show may be cast in our Magic Box production.

FTT’s PreTeen Players for ages 8-12 still has available space in their afternoon program. That group will produce Annie Kids at Tomlinson Middle School. More information is available at fairfieldrecreation.com.

FTT is also seeking teens this summer for their backstage crews. Hours are somewhat flexible and experience is helpful, but not required. Teens are needed for Set Construction, Art Crew, Stage/Running Crew, Make-up Crew, and Costume Crew for both programs. Please contact Carole Jean Frawley at 203-372-9464 for further information or visit fairfieldteentheatre.org.
