You might not have heard the news but last week the legislature’s Finance, Revenue and Bonding committee passed a tax package Senate bill 946 which raises taxes on Connecticut residents by $1.8 billion.

During debate, the Republican members of the committee voiced concern that most of the proposed tax hikes did not go through the regular process in having a public hearing to permit state residents could express their thoughts on the proposal. While Republican members voted against the plan, we still believe the public has a right to be heard.

On May 1, Republican leaders asked the leadership of the Finance committee to hold a public hearing and were outright ignored, therefore Republican members of the Finance, Revenue and Bonding committee have decided to host a public hearing for any resident or business owner who wishes to share their opinions on the proposed tax increases.

Here is a link of the letter written to the House and Senate Democratic leaders with the list of taxes that did not have a public hearing.

The public hearing on the proposed tax increases will be held Monday, May 11, at 1:30, in room 1E of the Legislative Office Building.

If you plan to testify make sure your remarks are clear and concise. Written testimony should be turned in before the hearing begins. It will then become part of the permanent legislative record.

If you cannot attend the public hearing but wish to submit testimony you can email the testimony to the committee at [email protected] and copy my office on the email at [email protected]

I believe it’s vitally important for the public to be able to have its voice heard in decisions made by our Government.
