‘Stories from the Hydrants’ at the Senior Center

Harrison-E-firehydrantsFULLJean Harrison of Fairfield will share “Stories from the Hydrants” Thursday, May 7, at 6 p.m., at the Senior Center, 100 Mona Terrace. The storytelling event is free and open to the public.

Many fire hydrants all over Fairfield have been painted by Harrison to look like little soldiers. Many additional hydrants were painted to celebrate the town’s 375th birthday, which occurred in 2014.

The woman behind this project, Jean Harrison, 81, of Fairfield, originally began painting fire hydrants back in 1976 to celebrate the country’s bicentennial. The Selectman’s Office approached her and asked if she would be interested in painting more in town in celebration once again.

Each hydrant has a history, because people approached her as she painted, some helped, and their stories flowed. Some stories are very touching and were told from the heart. The public is invited to this session of stories from the hydrants, and it is free of charge.

For more information, call 203-256-3166. The Center is handicapped accessible and there is plenty of free parking.
