Boys lacrosse: Demilt OT strike powers Ludlowe (Video)

Trevor Demilt scored the game-winning goal with 7.7 seconds left in overtime, as the Fairfield Ludlowe boys lacrosse team edged Xavier High of Middletown, 6-5, at Fairfield University’s Rafferty Stadium on Wednesday night.

Senior midfielder Matt Doyle netted a hat trick for coach Chris Parisi’s Falcons, while Tim MacDonald notched a pair of goals to lead the way in the season opener for both teams.

Xavier’s Brett Reid had tied the game with 4:58 left in regulation after a sustained possession, after Doyle’s third marker had staked Ludlowe to a 5-4 advantage with 59 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Doyle opened the scoring with 1:51 left in the first quarter, slinging home a low shot.

Wesley Reid then found the back of the net twice (6:12 and 3:17), followed by a Chris Connolly tally, as Xavier grabbed a 3-1 lead with 2:28 left in the half.

MacDonald then hit for consecutive goals, the second off a counterattack with 45.9 seconds left, as Ludlowe tied the game at 3 heading into the locker room.

After Doyle’s skip shot put Ludlowe ahead 4-3 at 5:14 of the third quarter, Colin McCarthy forged a deadlock at 4-4 with a goal with 1:19 left in the period.

Ludlowe travels to Blue and Gold Stadium on Saturday afternoon to face Newtown High at 2 p.m.
