Parkinson’s patients invited to participate in UConn research study

On Thursday, April 9, The Watermark at 3030 Park will host its monthly Parkinson’s Support Group. The meeting is open to anyone living with or caring for someone with Parkinson’s disease. The group will meet at 11:30 a.m. at the senior living community located at 3030 Park Avenue on the Bridgeport-Fairfield town line.

This month’s support group will be led by Prajakta Nair, a Kinesiology graduate student at the University of Connecticut. Nair will discuss the latest Parkinson’s research being conducted at UConn and will invite support group members to participate in a Parkinson’s research study immediately following the discussion.

“This month we look forward to gaining insight from Prajakta in terms of the science behind movement disorders,” said Marlane Argianas, Resident Services Coordinator at The Watermark at 3030 Park. “We’re pleased to have been chosen as a research location for this study, and encourage our support group participants to contribute to the advancement in scientific knowledge on Parkinson’s disease.”

The voluntary research study following the support group will be looking at the trunk posture of people living with Parkinson’s. Many people with Parkinson’s display stooped posture, which may impair their daily functions. This study will consist of five non-invasive measurements designed to help physicians and physical therapists better diagnose the disease, and provide treatment and exercises that can help improve posture.

The Watermark at 3030 Park also offers a bi-weekly Parkinson’s fitness class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:45. The class, led by The Watermark’s Fitness Director Cindy McGuire, consists of balance and strengthening exercises that focus on the needs of those living with Parkinson’s. Due to a limited number of spaces, reservations and a small participation fee are required for the fitness class.

For more information or to RSVP for the fitness class, please contact Cindy McGuire at 203-373-6108. To RSVP for the Parkinson’s Support Group, please contact Marlane Argianas at 203-373-6288.
