Pequot’s Meet the Author: Lian Dolan

Lian Dolan

Meet the Author, Lian Dolan, on Sunday, April 12, from 4-6 p.m., at Pequot Library.

The youngest of eight children who grew up in Southport, Dolan graduated from Fairfield’s Roger Ludlowe High School. She will give a 30-40 minute author talk, following Q & A, book sales, signing, and refreshments. This program is free and open to the public.

Her latest novel, Elizabeth the First Wife, combines romance, comedy, and Shakespeare. It received a Library Journal starred review, “A charmingly funny and effortless read…” and was a Los Angeles Times Bestseller.

The main character, Elizabeth Lancaster, is perfectly happy. Why shouldn’t she be? She teaches Shakespeare at a respectable community college. She’s got an impressive family that includes a Nobel Laureate father, an opinionated mother, one sister who’s curing cancer, and another go-getter who’s married to a Congressman. Plus she inherited a stunning Early California hacienda from her grandmother. Well, it will be stunning if she ever finds the capital to re-do just about everything.

So why does everyone keep telling her she needs a more prestigious job, upgraded countertops, and, most of all, a better man than her famous ex-husband, movie star FX Fahey? Elizabeth silences her family and surprises herself when she joins her ex to work at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Over the course of the summer, she discovers that men can change, politics can be sexy, dogs rule and William Shakespeare has a thing or two to teach her about modern relationships.

Lian Dolan has been working in the world of women’s media for 20 years as a writer, producer, talk show host, podcast pioneer and now novelist. She currently writes the blog and produces the weekly podcast The Chaos Chronicles, a humorous look at modern motherhood. The Chaos Chronicles is being developed into a half-hour comedy by Nickelodeon for Nick @ Nite.

Dolan is also a regular weekly contributor to Oprah.com as a parenting expert on the Relationships page. She writes an humor advice column focusing on parenting, friendship and family dynamics.

Prior to her work on Chaos Chronicles and Oprah.com, and she created Satellite Sisters, an award-winning talk show, blog, and website, with her four real sisters. From 2000 to 2009, Satellite Sisters won 8 Gracie Allen Awards for Excellence in Women’s Media and had a nationwide audience of a million listeners a week.

Dolan is also the co-author of Satellite Sisters UnCommon Senses, published in 2001 by Riverhead. Her writing has been featured in many national magazines including regular columns in O, The Oprah Magazine and Working Mother. She has contributed regularly to makinglifebetter.com. Her essays have also appeared in several anthologies, including Chicken Soup for the Sister’s Soul and Over the Hill and Between the Sheets: Love, Sex and Lust in Middle Age. She has appeared numerous TV shows including The Today Show, CBS Sunday Morning and The Oprah Winfrey Show. She is a popular speaker for groups and corporations, always using humor as hook in her speeches. Dolan currently resides in Pasadena, CA.

Dolan says, “I know I’m talking about my latest novel Elizabeth the First Wife, but I will also talk about writing my first novel Helen of Pasadena ( 2010) as there are a lot of Southport parallels in that book that I think the locals will appreciate.’
