Receive Fairfield Democratic Awards

On Sunday, March 29, the Fairfield Democratic Town Committee honored Ruth Smey with the Eunice Postol Award and Steven Sheinberg with the Denise Dougiello Young Turk Award during their annual Century Club Brunch at the Paterson Club in Fairfield.

The Eunice Postol Award is given annually to a Democrat who has over the past years exemplified the undying dedication to community service that Eunice Postol provided to the Town. Candidates for this award will have served with distinction in a significant community service effort.

Ruth Smey’s political career began upon joining the Democratic Town Committee (DTC) in 1979, during which she has served on the local legislative body as a Representative Town Meeting (RTM) Member, first in 1981-1983 and then again since 2005. Ruth served as a Fairfield Commissioner of Transportation from 1981-1985 and has been an elected Constable since 1983. Ruth has been a Justice of the Peace since first being elected in 1988. In recent years Ruth has served as Chair of the Senior Tax Advisory. She has served for many years as the District Leader in Fairfield’s RTM District 5 in addition to serving when able on the Fundraising Committee for the DTC.

In addition to Ruth’s political work, she has been an avid community volunteer and leader. She served as Vice President of the American Heart Association Fairfield County Chapter 1989-1992. Ruth has been a faithful member of Holy Parish Church for more than 55 years and more recently has served on the Holy Family/Assumption School Advisory Board from 2012-2014. Music and education has always been important to Ruth and she served as a Fairfield High School Band Parent from 1987-1991 while an active member of the Parent Teacher Association. Throughout it all Ruth managed to find time to fundraiser for the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, the Kennedy Center in Bridgeport Connecticut, and in a moment’s notice assembled a phone bank in her office and raised $38K for her son’s classmate’s surgery in 1991. This is all part of Ruth’s “Can-Do” spirit.

The Denise Dougiello Young Turk Award is given annually to an individual who is active in the party and who has contributed in an exceptional way toward meeting its goals and objectives. Started 40 years ago by a young band of Democratic newcomers, led by John Sullivan , they were dubbed the Young Turks. They challenged the status quo and were successful in transforming the Fairfield DTC into a vibrant source of ideas and initiatives.

Steven Sheinberg has made an incredible impact in a short period of time for the Fairfield Democrats. Originally a New York resident, Steven moved to Fairfield in 2012. His past involvement as an Democratic Party organizer as Past President of the North Shore Democratic Association (Bayside/Flushing) set the stage for becoming a Fairfield DTC member and volunteering for the 2013 Fairfield campaign

In 2014, Steven became Campaign Coordinator and organized a unified team to elect local and statewide candidates. This contributed to 2014 Fairfield’s Democracy Cup Award by the Secretary of State and Governor Malloy. Of the many volunteers recruited with the 2014 campaign, eight were nominated by Steven to fill vacancies on the Fairfield DTC.

Steven has been a community activist in our town, supporting the budget process and the rebuilding of Penfield Pavilion. He is a member of FACES (Fairfielders Advocating for Competitive Education Spending) and helped to organize a rally of supporters for the Board of Finance and RTM public hearings regarding the budget last year.
