Holocaust remembrance program slated

Yom Ha’Shoah (Holocaust Commemoration) Program will be presented by the Congregation for Humanistic Judaism (CHJ) Saturday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m., at the Southport Congregational Church, 524 Pequot Avenue, Southport.

Following a brief remembrance service, the short film Why We Remember the Holocaust will be shown. We will also watch a play reading of Children of the Holocaust, by Robert Mauro by 6th and 8th grade students from Black Rock Elementary School in Bridgeport. Students from Fairfield University will show their final memorial projects about choosing between being a bystander and an upstander.

Local Westport poet Stephen Herz will read selected poems from his latest Holocaust book Marked.

CHJ member and Wilton resident Lou Reens survived the Holocaust as a hidden child in Holland and he will speak of his personal experiences. Joining him will be Westport resident Anita Schorr who will also speak about her experiences as a Holocaust survivor.

The program is free and open to the public. It is suitable for middle-school children and especially Mitzvah class students. Please feel free to share with family and friends.

The Congregation for Humanistic Judaism is a welcoming, supportive community, founded in 1967, for secular Jews and their families to affirm, celebrate, and enrich Jewish identity and values. CHJ believes in personal responsibility to fulfill the Jewish ideals of loving-kindness, justice, and good deeds.

CHJ has a full Sunday school program from pre-K leading to Bar and Bat Mitzvah, and a full program of events for adults that includes Jewish holiday celebrations, Friday evening and Sunday morning programs, book and film groups, and other activities. Interfaith couples are welcome. For more information visit www.humanisticjews.org or contact [email protected]
