Firefighters brave snow and ice to extinguish chimney fire

On Saturday, March 28, at 9:33 p.m. Fairfield firefighters responded to a report of a chimney fire at 199 Toilsome Hill Road.

Lt. Eannotti was the first fire officer on scene reported smoke and fire coming from the chimney. Hampered by the cold temperatures and the slippery conditions caused by wind-driven snow, firefighters used the aerial device on Ladder 2 to access the roof and extinguish fire in the chimney. Salvage covers were placed around the hearth to protect the wood floors and interior furnishings.

According to Asst. Chief George Gomola, the incident commander “Careful coordination of interior and exterior firefighting operations resulted in the safe extinguishment of the fire in the chimney and prevented any damage to the interior of the home.” Firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to insure that the fire had not extended beyond the chimney.

Fairfield Engines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, L1, L2 and C-3 responded. The fire was deemed under control at 21:47 hrs. The last fire unit left the scene at approximately 22:33 hrs. No injuries were reported.
