Fairfield Easton Medical Reserve Corps celebrates 10-year anniversary

The Fairfield Easton Medical Reserve Corps (FEMRC) was established on March 24, 2005, marking its 10 year anniversary this week. The role of the FEMRC is to assist the Fairfield and Easton Health Departments in times of public health emergencies with the mass dispensing of vaccines or antibiotics or with the mass care/shelter needs of the residents of Fairfield and Easton.

While the word “Medical” does appear in the title, it is important to understand that a successful response to almost any event would require the commitment of many and in some cases more, non-medical members working alongside our medical members. The FEMRC currently has about 348 members including 213 medical members and 135 non-medical members. The FEMRC is comprised of volunteer residents mostly from the towns of Fairfield and Easton and is coordinated and supported by the staff of the Fairfield Health Department.

On Wednesday, March 4, 2015, the Fairfield Health Department held the annual MRC annual Education Session and Appreciation Dinner at the Fairfield Senior Center. The keynote speaker for the event was Mike Syrax, FBI Special Agent/Assistant Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Coordinator in CT. The evening concluded with an awards ceremony for the FEMRC members to recognize the many ways they have served the community over the last 10 years.

Over the past 10 years, FEMRC volunteers have participated in various events including training exercises for potential real life events such as Smallpox Vaccinator Training, the 2006 Mass Dispensing Drills, Flu Vaccination Exercises, shelters for hurricanes Irene and Sandy, and many more. The Fairfield Health Department would like to recognize their efforts and thank them for all the work they have done for the community.
