Relay For Life Fairfield seeks teams

The American Cancer Society is recruiting teams from businesses, schools, families, friends, places of worship, and more to participate in the 18th annual Relay For Life of Fairfield, which will be held Saturday, June 6, beginning at 3 p.m., at Fairfield Ludlowe High School.

Relay For Life is a community-based event that unites teams from Fairfield, Easton, Bridgeport and Norwalk by committing to finish the fight against cancer and raise funds to support the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving mission. Teams, individuals and cancer survivors and caregivers may sign up now for Relay For Life of Fairfield by visiting relayforlife.org/fairfieldct or by calling 1-800-227-2345.

The day of the event, teams and individuals will set up campsites and take turns walking or running around the track. Following the 6 p.m. opening ceremony, cancer survivors and caregivers will take a celebratory first lap to start the event and for the remainder of the event each team will have at least one participant on the track at all times. A Luminaria Ceremony will be held at 9 p.m. to honor those lost to cancer and those still battling. The event will conclude at midnight with a closing ceremony recognizing the top fundraising teams and individuals.

“The Relay For Life movement unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all”, said Liz Lyons, volunteer Relay For Life Event Lead. “Many participants are our family, friends, and neighbors who have faced cancer themselves. Each new team that registers brings us one step closer to a cure.”

This year is the 30th anniversary of the first Relay For Life event, which was started by oncologist Dr. Gordy Klatt in Tacoma, Washington and it grows larger each year. In 2014, four million people participated in more than 6,000 events worldwide. Last year, 1,429 people participated in Relay For Life of Fairfield and raised $222,856 all to support the Society’s mission to finish the fight against cancer.
