“I’m very excited about how my team did, they battled  the whole time,” Notre Dame boys head basketball coach Vin Laczkoski said after his No. 6 Lancers lost to No. 1 Hartford Weaver, 73-59, in the Class M state championship game at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Sayurday.

“We were 5-5 (season record) at one point…We had a chance to play for an SWC championship and this championship —that’s the allotted 28 games.”

Weaver put together an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter and took control late, as the Lancers finished the season at 21-7.

“We called some timeouts,” Laszkoski said about the Beavers’ run. “But when you are as athletic as they are, and as good as they are, its tough.”

Weaver head coach Reggie Hatchett said, “We knew they (Notre Dame) were a great team. Their tandem of guards (Jordan Pettway and C.J. Davidson) are the best we played all year.

“The maturation of Andre Lyons was the difference today. He had scored in doubles in only one game his year, ten on the dot, and he scored 23 tonight with a bunch of rebounds (11).”

Weaver took a 15-14 lead after one period and the game was tied at 30 at the half. The Lancers led 44-42 after three quarters.

Jake Heaton, who finished with 15 points, centered a pair of Weaver baskets with a jumper to open the final frame.

Pettway’s layup was good to make it 49-48 Weaver, but Notre Dame’s next point came on a Heaton jumper with 2:30 remaining and Weaver holding a 59-50 lead.

Pettway led Notre Dame in scoring with 17 points, including an 11-for-13 performance from the foul line.

Davidson had 14 points. Colin Burke grabbed eight rebounds and Heaton and Pettway each had four assists.

Chalyn Martin scored 14 points, Jaecee Martin 13 and KeAndre Fair had 12 for Weaver.
