Rotary Club conducts celebrity luncheon fund-raiser

The Fairfield Rotary Club will conduct its 12th annual Celebrity Luncheon Monday, March 9, from noon to 1:30 p.m., at Fairfield University. The luncheon is the largest fund-raising event for Fairfield Rotary and enables the Club to award more than $20,000 of grants to local charitable groups as well as an additional $22,500 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors in Fairfield, Bridgeport, and Easton who demonstrate a commitment to Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self.”

This year Fairfield Rotary welcomes the Honorable Joette Katz as its speaker. Justice Katz is a former Connecticut Supreme Court Justice and current Commissioner of the Department of Children and Families. Justice Katz has received many awards and honors, including the National Organization for Women’s Harriet Tubman Award, the UConn School of Law’s Distinguished Graduate Award, the Connecticut Bar Association’s Henry J. Naruk Judiciary Award, as well as an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws from Quinnipiac University School of Law.

As DCF Commissioner, she currently is responsible for more than 4,700 children, for whom her department has custody and guardianship — overseeing services to 36,000 children and 16,000 families in need of society’s help.

Attendees are asked to make a donation to the Fairfield Rotary Foundation. Typical donations range from $75 to $250.

Past speakers at the Celebrity Luncheon have included former Major League baseball pitchers Dwight Gooden and Tommy John, actor Charles Grodin, former NY Times technology writer David Pogue, and journalist Frank Deford.
