Hakim Fleming fourth at State Open

Notre Dame of Fairfield’s Hakim Fleming placed fourth in the heavyweight division at the State Open wrestling tournament in New Haven on Saturday.

Notre Dame’s T.J. McMillian, at 182 pounds, and Billy Kelly, at 195 pounds, also made it to the Open for Lancer coach Steve Fulco.

Fleming advanced to the consolation finals, where the senior lost a 6-5 overtime decision to Avon’s Gino Bonaluna, the Class L runner-up.

Fleming, the Class S champion, opened the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Danbury’s Mike Gaboardi, the fourth seed from Class LL.

In the quarterfinals, Fleming lost to Bonaluni 2-1. Chidi Broderick, the eventual champion and top-seeded Class LL champion from Xavier-Middletown, defeated Bonaluni by 3:27 pin in the semifinals.

Fleming dropped to wrestlebacks, where he won a 5-4 decision over Harding High’s Stephon O’Grinc and topped New Haven’s Gabriel Stiles 5-3.

Now in the consolation semis, Fleming pinned Simsbury’s Lukas Stone, the Class LL runner-up, in 53 seconds.

McMillian, the Class S runner-up, dropped his first match by 2:47 fall to Suffield/Windsor Lock’s Steven Sobato, the third-place finisher in Class M.

In the consolation round, McMillian lost by second-period fall to Waterford’s Justin Keating.

Kelly, who placed third in Class S, lost to Newtown High’s Andy Hubina, the Class LL runner-up, by last-second fall in his first match.

In wrestlebacks, Kelly lost by 4:41 pin to Mike Sullivan from Ledyard.
