Fleming in State Open wrestling quarterfinals

Notre Dame of Fairfield’s heavyweight Hakim Fleming advanced to the quarterfinals at the State Open Wrestling Championships in New Haven on Friday.

The Class S champion, Fleming defeated Danbury’s Michael Gaboardi, the fourth-place finisher in Class LL, 2-1.
He will meet Avon’s Gino Bonalumi, the Class M runner-up, in the quarters.

Notre Dame’s 182-pound  T.J. McMillian, the Class S runner-up, lost to Suffield’s Steven Sobata, the third-place finisher in Class M, by 2:47 fall in his first match.
In the consolation round, McMillian lost by 2:59 fall to Waterford’s Justin Keating, the sixth seed from Class M.

Bill Kelly won his opening match at 195 pounds with an 11-3 major decision over Fitch-Groton’s Trent Evans, the sixth-place finisher in Class L.
Kelly, who was third in Class S, lost to Newtown’s Class LL runner-up Andy Hubina, by 6:00 fall in the next round.

In consolations, Kelly fell in 3:41 to Ledyard’s Mike Sullivan, the sixth seed from Class M.
