Wales, Lind advance to Open quarterfinals

Fairfield Ludlowe’s George Wales and Chase Lind each advanced to the quarterfinal round at the State Open Wrestling Championships in New Haven on Friday.

The runner-up at 120 pounds in Class L, Wales won a 15-4 major decision over Southington’s Austin Abacheri, the third seed from Class LL.

Wales will meet Class M champion Ryan Luth from Foran High-Milford in the quarterfinals when wrestling resumes at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Lind, the Class L champion at 152 pounds, defeated Simsbury’s Ryan Juliano, the fourth seed from Class LL, by 14-0 major decision.

He will wrestle Class S runner-up Cullen Contos from Windham in the quarterfinals.

Lee Stenild-Johanson defeated Amity-Woodbridge’s Ken Seaton, 4-3, in the first round. The third-place finisher in Class L, he lost 9-2 to Xavier-Middletown’s Steve Burgos, the Class LL runner-up, in the next round.

Stenild-Johanson won by forfeit over Immaculate/Joel Barlow’s Elias Papadimitriou, the sixth seed from Class L, in consolations.

In the next round, he will meet Northwestern’s Gabriel Schwartz, the didth seed from Class S.
