Police dog Ruger tracked a suspect from an armed robbery at a gas station Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Fairfield police responded to a robbery in progress at Star Fuels, 350 Jennings Road, at 9 p.m.

According to police reports, the robber walked into the gas station, confronted a woman — the sole employee in the store — and demanded cash. He held a large knife in the waistband of his pants while telling the employee to turn over the cash.

The employee was not injured during the robbery, but was threatened with the weapon.

The suspect is described as a black male approximately 6 feet tall with an average build. He was wearing a hooded black sweatshirt and gray sweatpants. He had a black scarf covering his mouth. He fled on foot with cash southbound through the parking lot and onto Jennings Road.

Fairfield officers, including Officer Kevin Wells and his K-9 Ruger, started a track from the gas station that led them several streets away to a nearby home. The home was secured by officers, and detectives were called in to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Detectives executed a search warrant on the suspect’s home and are attempting to recover evidence of the crime and to identify the suspect.

“The Police Department is proud of the accomplishments produced by the K-9 Unit over the past year,” according to a release from the department. “Officer Wells has exemplified himself working tirelessly to train and fine tune the skills needed for Ruger to conduct hard surface tracks. He was able to perform a successful track even in adverse weather conditions. We are confident that this robbery will be solved with an arrest of the person involved. A successful outcome of an investigation of this type can only be done through the availability of a K-9 to respond in a timely manner.”
