Notre Dame advances in girls basketball

Notre Dame of Fairfield’s girls basketball team overcame late-regulation and first overtime comebacks by host Newtown High to win, 79-74, in the quarterfinal round of the South-West Conference tournament on Tuesday.

Kayla Croswell scored 24 points and Taylor Ceballos had 22 in the win.

Second-seeded Newtown hit 11 three-pointers, including Haley Ryan’s buzzer-beater to force OT tied at 55
Newtown trailed by as many as 13 in the second half an 12 in the fourth quarter.

Newtown’s Sarah Lynch tied the game at 63 with three seconds left in the first overtime. Croswell had a dozen points in the second OT period alone.

The Lancers, seeded third, will take on No. 1 New Fairfield in the championship game on Thursday. The game is set for 7:30 pm, at Newtown High’s gym.
