Fairfield fights second house fire within 24 hours

At 10:08 a.m., on Friday, Feb. 20, the Fairfield Emergency Communication Center received a call reporting a fire in the basement at 333 Cornell Road. Fairfield Fire Engines 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 and Ladders 1, 2, and Car 3 responded, with Engine 3 arriving on the scene within 2 minutes confirming a working fire with smoke showing.

Engine 3 and Engine 1 stretched interior hose lines to control the fire in the basement and first floor. Fire Chief Richard Felner and representatives from the Fire Marshal’s Office and Building Department were on scene. Westport and Easton Fire Department’s provided mutual aid resources to cover Fairfield Fire Stations 1 and 2. Assistant Chief Schuyler Sherwood, who served as Incident Commander in Car 3, placed the incident under control within 45 minutes, with Engine 3 the last to clear the scene at 11:48. The fire originated in the basement and was the direct result of attempting to defrost frozen pipes.

“The aggressive attack by our fire department in the sub-freezing temperature and the homeowner’s decision to immediately call 911 limited the spread of fire and damage to the structure,” said Assistant Chief Sherwood. Assistant Chief Sherwood went on to say “With this extremely cold weather, many residents are concerned about frozen pipes. The American Red Cross has information posted on their web site, www.redcross.org, which offers guidance on how to prevent frozen pipes and what you can do if your pipes freeze. Certainly contacting a licensed plumber is strong consideration as they should know the safest method to defrost frozen pipes.”
