AmeriCares names Varughese new medical officer

AmeriCares, the Stamford-based emergency response and global health organization, has welcomed Dr. Julie Varughese as its new medical officer and senior technical advisor, access to medicines and supplies.

In her new role, Dr. Varughese is responsible for increasing access to quality medicine for low-income patients in more than 90 countries. She shapes programs to enhance patient care, provides medical oversight and reviews offers of donated products from more than 200 pharmaceutical and medical supply companies, ensuring the contributed items are used safely and effectively by AmeriCares 3,500 health care partners around the globe. The world’s leading nonprofit provider of donated medicines and supplies, AmeriCares delivers more than $500 million in quality medical products annually for patients in need.

Dr. Varughese is board certified in infectious disease, internal medicine and pediatrics. She was previously a Clinical Infectious Disease Attending at Norwalk Medical Group and Norwalk Hospital and worked in Norwalk Community Health Center’s HIV clinic. Experienced in providing medical care in challenging settings, she has worked in India, South Africa, Guatemala and Ecuador.

Dr. Varughese earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., and a medical degree from Rush University in Chicago, Ill., where she completed her residency training. She also completed an infectious disease fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY. She lives in Fairfield, Conn., with her husband, Mat, and two children.
