Fairfield Selectmen honor Scouts for ‘Citizenship in Community’

The Fairfield Board of Selectmen honored 11 scouts from Troop 90 for completing the Boy Scout Merit Badge “Citizenship in the Community” at their meeting last week. The Selectmen issued a proclamation to each scout proclaiming Wednesday, February 11, 2015 as their day in the Town of Fairfield and called upon all citizens to congratulate each scout on all of their tremendous achievements in scouts and for being outstanding members of the Fairfield community.

This important badge is an Eagle Scout required badge and is a difficult badge to earn.

In addition to the vigorous Boy Scout requirements, the scouts, who earned this prestigious badge, served their community in many ways.

Some of the community service performed included a drive that collected about 27 wholesize bottles of laundry detergent to give to single mothers in Fairfield and Bridgeport, leading the Troop in a toy drive and teaming up with the Fairfield police to bring four dozen brand new toys to needy children during the holiday season, and collecting money to purchase a gift card at Stop & Shop for a family in need.

The 11 troop members also enjoyed interacting with seniors at the Fairfield Senior Center by joining them for dinner and having fun and interesting discussions, escorting them with flashlights to their vehicles when it got dark, playing pickleball, washing all of the windows in the front entrance of the Center, straightening out the waiting room area, configuring the dining room so people with wheelchairs and walkers could get to each table, and rebuilding the Center’s library by unpacking books and sorting them by genre and putting them on the bookshelves with large print card catalogs.

Each scout gave a verbal presentation on a historical landmark in Fairfield and presented it to their Troop. With their participation in this Eagle Scout required merit badge, these troops are closer to becoming an Eagle Scout which is something they each aspire to become.
