Samuel Frank to compete for New England title

It’s off to Portland, Maine for 11-year old Samuel Frank after he took first place in the 10-11 age bracket of the Elks’ Hoop Shoot National Free throw Contest on Saturday at New Britain High School.
Frank captured the state championship trophy by besting the contestants from the other districts of the state, who convened for a chance to advance to the New England Championships to be held in Portland the weekend of March 27.
There, the Osborn Hill fifth grader will compete against the state champions of the other five New England states where the winners advance to the national finals in Springfield in April.
Frank made 20 of 25 free throws to take the state title over Evan Sikorsky of Wethersfield. Other winners were 8-9 year olds Sophia Ricon of Glastonbury and Michael Powell of Stamford.
The10-11 girl champion was Caitlyn Shea of Southington, followed by 12-13 winners Heaven Rodriguez of New Britain and Branford’s Jason Hackett.
Frank will attempt to follow in the footsteps of the four prior national finalists sponsored by the Fairfield Elks Lodge — Cathy McGillicuddy in 1976, Dan Pangrazio in 1988, J.D. Fetcho in 1999 and Matt Doyle in 2007 — who is currently starring for the Fairfield Ludlowe varsity basketball team.
