Opera series for seniors starts Feb. 15

On Sunday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m., The Watermark at 3030 Park will continue its “Opera in the Afternoon” series, a reoccurring Watermark University course taught by retired Metropolitan Opera chorister Ross Crolius. Watermark University is a continuing education program designed to keep seniors’ minds and bodies fit.

Each class is approximately seventy minutes long and will feature a different opera. The class will provide background on the opera and the composer, with time at the end for audience questions. Classes are held once a month on Sundays at 2 p.m. at The Watermark, located at 3030 Park Avenue on the Bridgeport-Fairfield town line.

“We are pleased to continue offering this opera series as part of our Spring 2015 Watermark University catalog,” said Tracy-Ann Samuel, Community Life Director at The Watermark at 3030 Park. “Each class in the series is designed to be informative and entertaining, which offers a unique experience for both seasoned opera fans and newcomers.”

The Feb. 15 class will feature Rossini’s La Cenerentola. This Italian piece was first performed in 1817, and is a variation of the traditional story of Cinderella.

Other operas featured in the series include:

Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m.: Wagner’s Lohengrin

Sunday, April 19 at 2 p.m.: Puccini’s Turandot

Instructor Ross Crolius spent 25 years with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, averaging 180 performances each season. He holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music of The Johns Hopkins University and from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in New York. Prior to his tenure with the Metropolitan Opera, he performed with the Gregg Smith Singers, and the Soldiers’ Chorus of the U.S. Army Field Band.
