Former East Germany organist in two concerts

Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 160 Hill Farm Road will play host to a visiting organist Peter Kubath from the former East Germany, who will appear in two musical events at the church, Feb. 6 and 8.

Kubath, cantor of the historic Moravian Church in Herrnhut, Germany, will present a recital of classical European organ music chosen to highlight the sounds of the Hutchings-Cooper organ on Friday, Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

On Sunday, Feb. 8, at 4 p.m., Kubath will lead a hymn sing with assistance from Our Saviour’s Music Director Dr. Alice Caldwell and members of the church’s music program. The hymn sing will reflect the diversity of music represented in contemporary hymnals of the Lutheran and Moravian churches in Europe and the United States. A potluck supper will follow the hymn sing, with opportunity for conversation with Mr. Kubath, who will share his recollections of growing up a Christian in the communist and atheist environment of the former East Germany. Admission is free.

Kubath studied church music at the Hochschule für Kirchenmusik in Halle, Germany, earning the prestigious “A” diploma in 2000. Since that time, he has served as cantor, or music director, of the Moravian Church in Herrnhut. Active as a soloist, teacher and conductor, he was music editor of the 2009 hymnal for the German-speaking Moravian Church.

The town of Herrnhut, located in the German state of Saxony, near the border with Poland and the Czech Republic, holds an important place in the history of the Moravian Church. Religious fugitives from Moravia (in the modern Czech Republic) sought refuge on the land of Count Ludwig von Zinzendorf, and established Herrnhut (“The Lord’s Watch”) on June 17, 1722, according to the website,

In 2007, members of the youth choir of Our Saviour’s traveled to eastern Germany and for part of their visit were hosted by members of the Moravian youth choir led by Mr. Kubath.
