Bicycle & Pedestrian Committee elects officers

“The town of Fairfield is a great place to ride a bicycle, walk, run or do all three if you are so inclined, but we believe it can be even better experience,” said Keith Gallinelli, the newly elected chairman of the Town of Fairfield Bicycle & Pedestrian Committee.

The committee, appointed by the Board of Selectmen in November 2014, recently elected officers and is charged with implementing the Town of Fairfield’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan as earlier approved by the town selectmen.

The new committee’s formation and its role as an advocate for the master plan itself is a result of earlier work by forerunner groups including the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan Advisory Committee, the Fairfield Bike/Walk Coalition as well as town staff.

The committee is now in the process of developing and prioritizing goals for the year 2015. “Our overall hope is to be able to change and enhance the public’s expectations on biking, walking and running safely and pleasantly in Fairfield. As the official town panel responsible for collaborating with town employees to implement the plan, we are all focused on encouraging walking and biking for transportation, recreation, good health and quality of life,” said Gallinelli.

“Walking and biking conserve energy, improve air quality, reduce traffic and the need for parking, improve health and fitness and invigorate the local economy through increased access to local businesses and greater potential for tourism,” he added.

Fellow members of the committee include Elizabeth Gardner, Linda A. Lach, Edward F. Lane (secretary), Donald R. Hyman, Laura L. OBrien (vice chair), William N. Pollack, Karen Secrist and Robert Tota, M.D.
