Award-winning documentary filmmaker speaks at Y's Women

Perry Miller Adato, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, will be the guest speaker at the Jan. 26 meeting of the Y’s Women. The program will be held at Temple Israel, 10 Coleytown Road in Westport, beginning at 10:45 a.m. with coffee and conversation, followed by the program at 11:30 a.m.

In her presentation, Adato will share highlights of her longtime career as director/producer of biographical films about artists and writers. Her debut film, “Dylan Thomas: The World I Breathe,” won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement for Cultural Documentary in 1968. Her later films, “Gertrude Stein: When This You See, Remember Me,” and “Picasso-A Painter’s Diary,” were both subsequently nominated for Emmy Awards. She also garnered the prestigious Directors’ Guild of America awards for her biographies of Georgia O’Keefe, Carl Sandburg and Eugene O’Neil, including the the first for a woman in 1977. In 2010, she achieved her career “dream” with the making of “Paris : The Luminous Years,” a two-part history of the rise of modernism in Western arts. Funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and other major foundations, the film premiered on WNET/Channel 13.

The Y’s Women, founded in 1992, serves active and involved working and retired women in Fairfield County, and has a membership of more than 400 members. Members are offered the opportunity to join and participate in a wide a range of satellite groups, including three book clubs; a lively current events discussion group; a foreign film series; bridge with a closing marathon for prize money; “Solos” for singles; a weekly walking group; monthly group trips to area museums and other interesting sites, and the more far-reaching group tours to cultural and historical events in NYC, the tri-state area, and newly on trips abroad.
