Vahey takes oath of office

Cristin McCarthy Vahey (D-Fairfield) was officially sworn in as the State Representative from the 133rd House District. Secretary of the State Denise Merrill presided over the morning ceremony in the State Capitol.

“It is an honor to be one of Fairfield’s voices in the General Assembly,” Rep. McCarthy Vahey said. “I look forward to a productive session and the new challenges ahead.”

Rep. Vahey will be serving on the Appropriations, Education and Transportation Committees.

“I’m confident Rep. Vahey’s experience will prove to be an asset to each of her committees,” said Speaker Sharkey. “I know Cristin will bring the same energy that has benefitted Fairfield over the years and will now serve the Caucus well in the upcoming session.”

The Appropriations committee is the General Assembly’s budget-writing committee. Other issues under the committee’s jurisdiction include matters relating to state employees’ salaries, benefits and retirement, teachers’ retirement and veterans’ pensions and collective bargaining agreements and arbitration awards for all state employees.

The Education Committee has cognizance of all matters relating to the Department of Education; local and regional boards of education and the substantive law of collective bargaining covering teachers and professional employees of such boards; vocational rehabilitation; the Commission on the Arts; and libraries, museums and historical and cultural associations.

The Transportation Committee has oversight of all matters related to roads, bridges, and mass transit.

Rep. Vahey served as Deputy Moderator and Minority Leader in Fairfield’s Town Meeting in 2005 and was a member of the Fairfield Board of Selectmen, elected in 2011.
