The Fairfield Museum and History Center kicks off the new year with a book talk, new exhibitions, family programs and more.

On Thursday, Jan. 15, from 6-8 p.m., the public is invited to Museum After Dark, a free wine and cheese evening featuring authors Laurie Heiss and Jill Smyth, who will discuss their new book, The Merritt Parkway: The Road That Shaped a Region.

From its complicated beginnings to the present, learn about the fascinating history of this public works project that transformed Fairfield County. In 1934, at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Merritt Parkway, Schuyler Merritt stated, “This great highway is not being constructed primarily for rapid transit but for pleasant transit.” The Parkway remains both functional and beautiful, holding a unique place in the heart of Connecticut’s drivers.

Museum After Dark will also open a new exhibition, Mobilizing the Home Front: Posters from World War II, featuring original war-time posters from the Museum’s collection, by artists including illustrator Norman Rockwell, Jean Carlu, Victor Keppler, H. Price and others.

During WWII, U.S. government created posters to rally support for the war, urging Americans to unite to meet the challenges of wartime. Interestingly, many of the posters speak to issues we still face today: of sacrifice, responsibility, and the use of limited resources. On view Jan. 16-May 10.

The Fairfield Museum and History Center is a community cultural arts and education center established in 2007 by the 103-year old Fairfield Historical Society. Located at 370 Beach Road in Fairfield, the Museum is open daily, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free to Museum members; $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors.
