Fairfield man arrested for DUI, drug charges

Fairfield Police report that Robert Michael Smith, 42, of Kenwood Avenue, was arrested early this morning, Dec. 19, and charged with driving under the influence, failure to obey a traffic signal, failure to keep a drug in its original container, possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the report, a patrol officer noticed Smith’s vehicle stopped at the intersection of Grasmere Avenue and Kings Highway East shortly before 12:30 this morning, impeding traffic on Grasmere. The officer then watched as Smith drove through a red traffic light at the intersection, and subsequently pulled Smith over.

Smith was reportedly dazed and glassy-eyed and had difficulty following commands. The officer patted him down for weapons and found two smoking pipes, marijuana in a clear plastic bag, and 17 white round pills marked “54/142,” also in a bag. The officer additionally discovered valium in a proper prescription bottle in Smith’s possession.

Smith was released on a written promise to appear, with a court date of Jan. 1, 2015.
