Ludlowe boys defeat St. Joseph cagers

Fairfield Ludlowe opened its boys basketball season with a convincing 69-44 victory over St. Joseph in Trumbull on Wednesday night.
Ludlowe had lost eight straight against St. Joseph dating back to 2005-06.
“Any time you come in here and win, it feels great,” Ludlowe head coach John Dailey said. “I’ve been here eight years and I don’t think we’ve ever won here before this. This is a real tough place to play. This is a good basketball team. They’re a little down, but our kids played fantastic.”
Ludlowe, coming off a 5-15 season a year ago but well stocked with returning talent, led 20-8 at the end of the first quarter, 42-16 at halftime and had a 63-25 advantage before pulling its starters early in the fourth quarter.
Led by the play of 6-foot-6 sophomore center Hayes Kelchner (15 points, seven rebounds) and senior guard Matt Doyle (19 points, seven assists), the Falcons lived up to the preseason hype that had them challenging for an FCIAC playoff spot.
Ludlowe shot the ball well from the outside, getting two 3-pointers from junior Chris Howell (12 points) and another from senior Darren Lee.
