Henry C. Reid & Son Jewelers closes New Canaan store

The one-two punch of first announcing a store closing sale and then starting it on Black Friday gave Henry C. Reid & Son Jewelers in New Canaan just what it was seeking — plenty of business. Customers seeking bargains streamed into the store at 72 Elm St. starting at 9:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 28.

Signs hanging inside told the tale: “Must Be Sold,” “Save up to 60%,” and “Must Be Liquidated.”

But things were not as dire as they seemed.

A store representative said that the owner, Harry French, was still going to keep open his other store in Fairfield.

“Harry wants to spend more time with his family, so he decided to go from two locations to one,” said the staffer, who preferred not to be identified.

French is the sole owner of the business, which began in Bridgeport over a century ago when, according to the company website, Henry C. Reid, a watch and clock maker, opened a store in 1910.

When his son, Herb, retired from the business, his then- partner French bought everyone out in 1978 but kept the store name, and eventually relocated the business to Fairfield and New Canaan. It was an Elm Street fixture for 14 years.

The plan is to sell as much of the inventory as possible, with no firm closing date.

“We don’t know how long we’ll be here,” said the store representative. “As soon as we can liquidate, we’ll close.”

Asked why the merchandise wasn’t simply taken to the Fairfield store, the source said, “there’s just too much inventory. We’d prefer to sell it off quickly at incredible value for customers. It’s been wall to wall people.”

The jeweler was the victim of what police called one of the most brazen acts in the village in years when men used a large hammer to smash the Elm Street window and steal three Rolex watches on Wednesday afternoon in November 2013.
